A training course held in the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência, Oeiras, Portugal, 30th September to 4th October 2002, taught by Richard White and Eduardo Dalcin.

Theme

This is a short training course for those involved in developing species diversity information systems, especially those that contain information about biological collections, or that contain a baseline species list or taxonomic framework. It is designed for biologists and project or database organisers and does not assume or require programming skills. The systems discussed may encompass plants, animals, fungi or micro-organisms.

Five major themes are addressed:

  1. Introduction to databases
  2. Species diversity data
  3. How to organise the taxonomic core of a species diversity information system
  4. Species diversity database software and how to use it
  5. Networks and links on the Internet including the Species 2000 and Tree of Life systems
